BEIJING, XIAN, DUNHUANG, TURFAN, URUMQI, KASHGAR, & SHANGHAI.
The great East-West trade route was first travelled in the 2nd century BC and an early trade in silk soon devleoped.
The starting point was Xian (previously known as Chang-An)then the capital of China ,which by 742AD, had the world's largest population of 2 million.
The route worked it's way west through Dunhuang and then along the foothills of the Heavenly Mountains avoiding the fierce Taklamakan Desert. Following afterwards the rich cities of Turpan and Kashgar before dividing across Central Asia or south in to present day Pakistan.
The way of life has changed little through the centuries and this a dimesion of China not to be seen anywhere else.
