Christmas in China is known as Sheng Dan Jieh, which means the Holy Birth Festival. Although some areas in China have observed the holiday for more than 400 years, there only approximately 10 million Protestants and 4 million Catholics in the country. That's less than one percent of the population. In recent years, Christmas has become more widely celebrated in the country, especially in Beijing and Hong Kong. Similar to Christmas traditions in other countries, a Chinese Christmas includes decorating a tree. Children hang stockings, exchange gifts and believe Santa will deliver presents.

Santa Claus is called Dun Che Lau Ren. Chinese Christian children hang muslin stockings and hope that Dun Che Lau Ren will bring them presents and treats to open on Christmas morning.
